A Life-Changing Accident
Several years ago, my wife suffered a terrible fall down a staircase that changed everything in an instant. She broke her neck so severely that it shattered into 74 pieces. Doctors later explained that she had a small amount of arthritis in her neck, something we never knew existed. Surprisingly, that condition helped prevent the injury from becoming even worse.
She was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where an incredible team of doctors performed a 36-hour surgery to save her life.
After spending a month in intensive care, she was transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. There, she worked every day to regain her strength and learn how to walk again. She spent three months in rehabilitation, overcoming obstacles that most people could never imagine.
Watching her determination during that time taught me more about courage than I ever thought possible.
Facing Another Battle
Just when we believed the hardest part was behind us, another challenge appeared.
Before what we hoped would be her final surgery, doctors performed an X-ray of her spine. During that imaging, they discovered a tumor on her lung.
She underwent surgery to remove the tumor and later received chemotherapy. Despite every effort, the cancer eventually spread to her bones.
She entered the hospital shortly before Thanksgiving and passed away on December 4.
Losing someone who fought so hard is something that changes you forever. Even now, her strength continues to inspire the way I approach life.
My Own Fight
As if life had not already delivered enough challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic brought another unexpected battle.
After testing positive for COVID, I became seriously ill and was admitted to the hospital. My condition deteriorated quickly, and I fell into a coma for nearly three weeks.
When I finally woke up, I learned that the illness had caused kidney failure. Dialysis became part of my daily life while I waited for answers.
Fortunately, my sister turned out to be a perfect kidney donor. Without hesitation, she offered to donate one of her kidneys, giving me another chance to move forward.
I still tell people that donating her kidney conveniently erased the $22 she owed me. A little humor has helped my family through some very difficult moments.
A Dream That Never Went Away
Long before these health challenges, my wife encouraged me to pursue a career that truly made me happy.
I had always enjoyed Boston’s history and loved sharing it with others. In 2018, I began working with a local trolley tour company, introducing visitors to one of America’s most historic cities. Meeting people from around the world and helping them experience Boston quickly became something I genuinely loved.
My wife often encouraged me to start my own business someday.
Life had other plans for a while. Caring for her, coping with loss, recovering from my own health issues, and rebuilding took time. After my recovery, I continued working with a small group tour company, gaining experience while keeping her dream alive in the back of my mind.
Eventually, I realized it was time to make that dream a reality.
